Literacy &   Numeracy

As a Tertiary Education Organisation (TEO) BMS has a role to play in meeting Priority 2 of the Tertiary Education Strategy (TES) -increasing literacy, numeracy levels in the workforce. We do this by including literacy, numeracy and language skills in all of our programmes.  We can also offer courses for the local community, including employees in the workplace.

The programme begins with a computer based 'pre-assessment', which indicates learners' needs and a programme of teaching is then integrated with the main course. The literacy/numeracy programme has both computer-based  and paper-based elements, tailored to suit each student.

A wide variety of literacy and numeracy skills are covered which can help improve reading comprehension, aid automatic recognition of words, improve personal voacabulary and help with spelling. Also practical skills such as form-filling and writing formal personal correspondence are included.

We also have English and Maths Unit Standards which students may study, especially if they wish to gain credits towards an NCEA qualification.
